We thank you for your courteous attention to our

enquiry, and for the loan of the copy of the Hong Kong Merchandise Marks

Ordinance, 1890, which we now beg to return."

Having had no occasion to take proceedings here under the English

Act, we are not in a position to dispute the accuracy of your statement

that the objections we raise concerning Hong Kong would apply equally

" to the Imperial Act. You write no doubt with a full knowledge on the

point, and are no doubt quite accurate thereon. At the same time we

would respectfully suggest that the existence of a loophole in the Im-

perial Act need form no barrier to the stoppage of that same loophole

in the Hong Kong Regulations. The conditions of legislation in Hong

Kong are, we presume, much less difficult than here, inasmuch as the work

to be done by the Legislative Council is less onerous than the work to

be done in the British Legislature, and it would therefore be easier

for that body to find the time to deal with a small matter like this.

We would therefore respectfully repeat our request that a recom-

mendation be made to the Governor & Council of Hong Kong for the elimí-

nation øfrom sub-sect.1.of Sect. 14. the words:- "unless the such name
